Title -

"EMMA"

Logline -

Life of a young woman living a pay check to pay check life. Spends her early mornings dreaming about stability by looking directly at her aspirations through a store's window.

Treatment -

"EMMA" is a drama that delves into the life of a young adult living a pay check to pay check life; desperately wondering what the future has in store for her. With constant struggles to worry about, the only time that she gets to daydream about serenity and stability, is during her early mornings before work. She spends her time looking directly at her aspirations, desires and goals through a store window. And in the course of her adventures, she changes and starts to slowly take control of her life.

Characters -

EMMA MILLER is 22, delicate featured. She wears dark, monotonous clothes with a contrasting pale face. She has her flaws, yet is vulnerable in a strong and empowering way. And although she does not know it yet, she is self-sufficient, as well as passionate in her likes and dislikes - knowing when to stand up for herself.

JAMES ROBERTS is 24, EMMA'S partner (not introduced in the opening scene). He is an office worker and is extremely put together. Contrasting with his partner which causes issues within the relationship.

SHERRY MILLER is 56, EMMA'S mother (not introduced in the opening scene). She has an icy relationship with her daughter, being not the most heartwarming mother-daughter duo. This is all due to EMMA'S lack of control of her life.

ANDRE MILLER is 60, EMMA'S father (not introduced in the opening scene). Although he does have a strained relationship with his daughter, he still tends to be closer to her in comparison to SHERRY MILLER.

Location (modern time) -

1. Emma's room in her apartment (INT. EMMA'S ROOM - NIGHT):

  • Walls of the room will be filled with sticky notes with reminders written on them, as well as posters which depict her personality.
  • The sticky notes will imply her disorganised life and her struggles to remember the bills that she has to pay and the dates they are due.
  • Bill envelopes with "PAST DUE" and "FINAL NOTICE" will be scattered all over her bed and floor - from the bills we will see her full name.

2. The outside, in front of a store's window (EXT. SHOPPING STREET - MORNING):

  • Empty street on a cold early morning with only Emma seen.
  • Expensive, high-end store in front of Emma showing her desires.
Storyboard -

During the 2 minute opening of my film "EMMA", the scenes are going to be filmed with no dialogue. This will highlight the loneliness of the character and develop the emotional tone of the film. However, there is going to be a song playing - non-diegetic.

During the first scenes - placed in the protagonist's bedroom - foley sound will be added to enhance realism and convey the ambience of the night-time street. This added foley will act as a diegetic sound in comparison to the non-diegetic music that will be introduced in the second part of the opening scene.

The second song, non-diegetic, will be introduced as Emma stares at a window display of a store. It will fade into the scene - starting quietly - and then start playing in its natural volume. The chosen song will convey the mood of the scene. It will help captivate the audience and evoke emotions behind the films storyline.
