CCR essay - integrating technologies
How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
This is an infographic which explores the impact of technology in the production of my project: “EMMA”. Within each stage of production, I integrated various technologies including software, hardware and online – which impacted the process and outcome of my final foundation portfolio.
Research and Planning:
Software – Filmr.
A video editing app – simple, fast and appropriate for beginners. Includes free yet advanced editing tools; from filters, transitions, speed and light adjustments the application allowed me to start creating preliminary short videos with ease and confidence.
It helped me develop a deeper understanding of how to approach filmmaking, while still allowing me to play around and explore various techniques and styles of editing.
“Boredom of a pandemic: the good and the bad” further allowed me to become more involved in the idea of researching and planning, as the software used was chosen specifically through detailed research – in order to fit my editing style and appear appropriate in the final result.
Hardware - iPhone 11.
Smartphone with various features providing countless possibilities. It allowed me to gather information easily at any given moment in order to find inspiration and take images for preliminary work, such as angles of a camera’s viewpoint and camera/subject distance.
Therefore, through the use of my smartphone I was able to get creatively inspired for my two-minute film opening and extend my knowledge in filmmaking comfortably and swiftly.
Online - Google chrome.
Free web browser – provided a search engine for researching conventions in professional media texts, specifically in various drama films. It allowed me to open multiple tabs in order to discover more about the genre drama and find inspiration for my own film opening.
Throughout this stage, Pinterest, Netflix and YouTube presented me with multiple media texts and photos that established motivation and innovation in creating my film “EMMA”. Moreover, they allowed me to gain some techniques that I wanted to use in my film opening, as well as stray away from others.
These techniques include the conventional shots and transitions used throughout the two-minute video that help the audience engage with the media text and understand its genre.
Production:
Hardware - Camera.
My Canon EOS M100 established a way for me to easily film the opening to the film “EMMA” as I already knew how to manage it and convey what I wanted to through filmmaking.
By having a compact camera that was able to film in great quality, the production stage unfolded naturally – making me satisfied with the footage taken.
Furthermore, it taught me key lessons regarding shaky footage and how I should incorporate tripods into future projects. This is specifically in order to prevent having to stabilise footage in the editing stage and waste time on doing so.
Online - Blog.
My media blog allowed me to look back at my plans and storyboard throughout the productions stage.
This was done in order to remind myself the key shots and symbols that I had to incorporate into my film opening – without having to fully rely on anything.
By doing so “EMMA” was able to seem more logical and honest in its narrative, while still portraying all the key moments and details needed to keep the audience engaged.
Post Production:
Software – iMovie.
iMovie, being a preinstalled video editing software, was fast and provides all the tools and special effects needed to edit for free.
The editing software, being the most fitting for my editing style, was extremely easy to use due to its beginner friendly features.
Moreover, most importantly this software allowed me to stabilise, and colour correct my footage in the editing stage. By wanting for the scenes to match each other in lighting and colour scheme, as well as continuously be stable, I used the 'match colour' and ‘stabilise shaky video’ option.
Overall, this allowed for ‘EMMA’ to become a more professional looking two-minute film opening.
Hardware – Computer.
My 14-inch MacBook Pro was the main hardware used to edit my Foundation Portfolio and update my blog.
By having a computer to rely on I was able to edit all of my footage for “EMMA” at any given moment. It provided me the freedom to edit anywhere and at any time.
Moreover, it allowed me to stay focused and continue working on my project while continuously exploring and developing new technical skills.
Online - Canva.
Canva, a free graphic design platform, allows users to create customisable visual content.
Personally, Canva allowed me to create my own production company logo, as well as film title.
This enabled me to create moving as well as regular logos in a fast and easy way.
Moreover, by using such a platform, I tried different fonts to fit the theme of my film.
Overall, Canva has been carefully picked out in order to create seamless and subtle details to the film opening, yet ones that fit the atmosphere and narrative of the whole film and its production company.
Creative Critical Reflection:
Software - Zoom.
Zoom, a videotelephony software program, is a secure, reliable video platform powering communication needs in an engaging manner.
It established a way for me to create an open conversation on the audiences and distribution of my film opening "EMMA".
Through zoom, I was able to create a fictional series: “The Creation” that celebrates the art of creativity and its distribution.
Such a software allowed me to connect with my sister and film such a conversation in a quick and easy manner by recording the meeting we had and uploading it on YouTube.
Software - Voice memos.
Voice memos, a portable audio recorder software, makes it easy to capture and share conversations.
This software granted me the ability to record my sisters and I’s fictional podcast on the conventions, social groups and issues used, as well as challenged, in my film opening "EMMA".
This was also an easy and creative way of conveying a podcast-like answer on the question given.
Hardware - Computer.
My computer allowed me to store all the footage safely.
By transferring all my footage onto my computer, I did not have to worry about losing any of it, as well as having to spend a long time on uploading it onto my editing software: iMovie.
Instead, I had it saved in an organised manner in my CCR media folder – which successfully made allocating it much easier.
Online - Prezi.
Prezi, a video and visual communication software, establishes creative and engaging ways of conveying presentations.
With an integrated video feature on the software, I was able to live present how my production skills developed throughout my film opening "EMMA".
Moreover, by being able to use my own photos and texts I was able to explore how to make the presentation more engaging and entertaining.
