Understanding media synergy and convergence

Throughout my media studies lessons I understood that media convergence is the 'coming together' of previously separated industries, such as computing, film and print, which increasingly use related technology and skilled workforce.

Overall, it is the combining of different forms of media in order to make a single form of a media product. It does so by bringing together computing, communication and content. For example, this can include magazines that now have websites or TV industries working with animation industries.

Synergy, on the other hand, is the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances or other agents, in order to produce a combined greater product. For example, the 'Skyfall' film having its own game and soundtrack - this generates public awareness and promotes the movie, while still benefitting all parties.

Both of these aspects are vital in production because when two major conglomerates come together or cooperate, they will be able to attract a larger audience, consequently resulting in more people seeing their media text and increasing its chances of success.
