Camera shots, angles and composition

In my two minute opening scene, camera shots, angles and composition were extremely significant. Due to the fact that this delves into how much space the audience sees in a particular frame and how the camera is positioned, it commonly portrays ideas about a character, setting or theme to an audience.

From my filming experience, shots and angles of a camera's viewpoint can impact the narrative, as well as the audience, in drastic ways.

Here are some of the examples from my own scenes and their effect:

From this scene we get introduced to the main protagonist in a reserved and unforthcoming way. We see the character from behind in order to add a sense of thrill to find out who she is.

Overall, the shot is complementary to the rule of thirds. This is done to create a relationship between the character and her surroundings - with the messy room echoing the situation in which she finds herself in.

In the proceeding scene a ground level shot is used. This is done specifically to establish and reveal more of the character's room - adding more depth to both the character and her surroundings.

Consequently, more of the storyline is being revealed to the audience in a slow paced way. This is done while still keeping them entertained since the character has not been fully revealed yet.

This shot, revealing where the character is, also follows the rule of thirds. This is done in a natural way that does not strain the eyes.

Moreover, the rule of thirds allows there to be a relationship between the character and the store in front of her. This is highlighted by a tilted over the shoulder angle - making the store seem more dominant over the character.

However, in this shot both the character and the store are seen through a full frame. This conveys the isolated feeling to the whole scene, showing how our protagonist is all alone.

Furthermore, our protagonist seems very small due to the distance between her and the camera. Therefore, the long shot emphasises the location; showing how little she is in comparison to her dream and ambition.
