Foundation portfolio editing process

After having successfully finished filming and transferring all of the footage onto my computer, I started editing.

As I started, I wanted to try using the software 'Filmora' - a free yet easy to use editing software. However, after getting used to the software and starting to edit, I decided to switch to 'iMovie' instead. This was due to the fact that it is much faster and provides all the tools and special effects needed to edit for free - unlike 'Filmora'.

Having put all of the scenes together and playing them as a whole for a few times I tried figuring out how much of the footage I have to trim. Moreover, I started colour correcting the scenes to match each other in lighting and colour scheme by using the 'match colour' option on 'iMovie'.

Furthermore, non-diegetic and diegetic sound/music were added to specific scenes during the editing process. Both of the foley and music have been downloaded easily onto the computer - since they are copyright free - and then uploaded onto 'iMovie'.

Once I did this, I played with the volume of different scenes and tried to find how loud the scenes have to be to convey the sounds for a sense of realism. However, such specific scenes had to be quieter to be able to hear the diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Therefore, I lowered the volume for most of the scenes without fully getting rid of the sound.

The non-diegetic music added onto the second part of the opening scene is a song called "Solitude" by Billie Holiday. I downloaded this song to specifically sound like a vinyl record playing in order to match the record player prop in the pervious scene. Moreover, the crackling sound of the record player - at the beginning of the song - echoes the diegetic sound of the street. This therefore enhances the ambience of the scene.

And as soon as all of this was completed, all of the logos, footage and sound were added together to form a two minute opening scene for my movie. After this, transitions of 'fade to black' have been added to smoothly transition from some of the scenes and the music has been edited to 'fade in' and 'fade out'.
